AIM Windows Release Notes

Release notes (Bug Fixes) for 1.0.378:

  • Buddy List enhancements: The Windows 95 AIM system tray icon now blinks when buddies sign on; AIM checks for valid buddy names when you enter them; New buddy names are created where the cursor is positioned

  • Windows 95: AIM now exits properly from the system tray icon

  • Windows 3.1: AIM appends information to the WIN.INI Load line instead of overwriting it, fixing problems with modems

  • AIM now checks hyperlinks before passing them to the browser and alerts the user if the hyperlink could present a possible security problem

  • Invite a Friend - you can now invite a friend to try AIM by selecting Sign on a Friend from the Menu options.

  • Lookup a Friend - you can now check to see if a friend is registered on AIM (or AOL) by selecting Find a Buddy from the Menu options.

  • "<New User>" now appears at the top of the Screen Name combobox on the Sign On dialog. You can register new screen names by signing on as a New User.

  • Update E-mail Address - you can now notify the AIM server of a change in your e-mail address by selecting Update E-mail Adress from the Menu options.

  • AIM now alerts the user if an invalid URL or an URL that poses a potential security risk is being passed to the browser.

  • The Preferences tabs have several new options: 1) On the Privacy tab you can set E-mail lookup options; 2) On the Buddy tab you can set the default font and font size for your Buddy List names; 3) On the Misc. tab you can disable graphical smilies; 4) New default sounds are included in this release. They can be enabled on the Sounds tab

  • Entering an Internet address in the Buddy List now offers to look up to find your Buddy's screen name.

  • Help files have been updated with the new features.

  • Better support of 3rd-Party WINSOCK errors so that Sign On completes successfully

  • AIM now detects if a Winsock is loaded even if it's not on the user PATH

  • Better detection when a TCP/IP connection is lost

  • Improved resource management

  • Fix for certain cases when the initial Instant Message was sent twice

  • Fix for certains cases when the Buddy List wasn't updating correctly when buddies signed on

  • Error messages no longer block incoming Instant Messages

Release notes (Bugs Fixed) for 1.0.240:

  • The default font in the Buddy List window was incorrect in version 1.0.234 (Win95 only). This release displays the correct font.

  • AIM now works with the Netscape Dialer on Windows 3.x. Previously, some users were unable to see online buddies and send/receive IMs.

  • The "Start AIM when Windows starts" option can now be disabled during the installation.

  • Changes made to options on the Sign On dialog now get saved without having to sign on.

  • The SOCKS5/HTTPS proxy password is now encrypted.

  • The Idle Response message no longer gets sent when AIM is not in an idle state

  • A user's own profile now shows up in the Info window the first time it is viewed.

  • Existing screen names can now be removed from the combo box on the Sign On dialog. To remove a name, select it and press the Delete key. This will bring up a confirmation dialog prior to removing the name.

  • The Help documentation has been updated with the new features.


Release notes (Bugs Fixed) for 1.0.217:

  • This release contains improved functionality with Online Buddy detection.

  • An Import/Export feature has been added which allows you to save your list of online buddies and many of your preference settings. You can then import your list and settings to another copy of AOL Instant Messenger or share them with friends. Note: You cannot import or export settings from an AOL account.

  • A Change Password/Screen Name feature has been added which allows you to change your password whenever you are signed on to the AOL Instant Messenger service. You can make any change you want to your password as long as your password contains between 4 and 16 characters.

  • If you are dissatisfied with the capitalization and spacing in your screen name, you can change it while you are signed on. If you want to make any other changes to your screen name, you must register a new screen name at the AOL Instant Messenger web site.

  • The Help documentation has been updated with the new features.
Release notes (Bugs Fixed) for 1.0.208:

  • The installer now checks to see if a previous version of AIM is running before starting the actual installation.

  • A Net Detect feature has been added. During the installation, users are asked if they want the AIM client to launch upon starting Windows and their mode of connecting. After enabling the "Save password" and "Auto- login" options on the Sign-On screen, the next time Windows is started, AIM will launch and connect automatically.

  • Screen names are only saved in the Sign On drop down menu if the login was successful.

  • Certain password combinations caused an "Invalid Password" error - this has been fixed.

  • The "Close Buddy List Window" functionality has been re-designed on Win95. Clicking the Minimize button closes the window; it can be re-opened by clicking on the icon in the system tray. Clicking the Close button exits the application.

  • The Delete key can be used to delete a screen or group name within the List Setup tab of the Buddy List window.

  • The Preferences dialog now fits on a 640x480 screen when running Win95.

  • "Allow only users on my Buddy List" has been added to the Privacy Tab in the Preferences dialog. This option allows only those users who have been added to a person's buddy list to communicate with that person.

  • An option has been added that allows a user to control the display of their idle time to other users. It is available on the Privacy tab in the Preferences dialog.

  • The "Enter key inserts Return" option, located on the Misc. tab of the preferences dialog, now works correctly when enabled.

  • Accelerator keys and tabbing now work correctly in the Privacy tab of Preferences dialog after adding/removing screen names.

  • Text in the Info window no longer gets truncated when using Large Fonts.

  • Text Formatting is no longer dropped after a link is inserted in an IM.

  • In Win 3.1.x, the drop down menu in the IM window now works.

  • In Win 3.1.x, Shift+F10 will bring up the right mouse button popup menu when focus is in the Buddy List window.

  • The Help documentation has been updated with the new features.


Release notes (Bug Fixes) for 1.0.08:

  • Default Buddy List window size is smaller, E-Mail lookups now handle users who have requested limited disclosure, selecting a browser under win95 should work again.
